Whey Protein

What is it?
Whey Protein is derived from the protein in cow's milk and is by far the most popular supplement in the health and fitness industry.

There are 3 main types of whey protein commonly found in whey protein powder supplements that include;

1. Whey Protein Isolate (WPI)
2. Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC)
3. Whey Protein Hydrolysate (WPH)

Whey Protein Isolate (WPI)
Whey Protein Isolates contain a higher percentage of pure protein per serve and are virtually lactose, carbohydrate and fat free.

WPI's are a fast absorbing protein powder, meaning they are ideal to take when you need a quick hit of protein such as post-workout or when you wake up.

They are easy on the stomach and easy to digest.

Because of these advantages, WPI products tend to be a bit more expensive than Whey Protein Concentrates or blended protein powders.

Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC)
Whey Protein Concentrate is arguably the most popular form of protein powder and the most common you'll find in a majority of protein supplements.

It normally contains 70% - 80% protein per serve and contains higher levels of lactose, fat and biological compounds than the WPI.

Whey Protein Concentrate is normally found in protein blends due to its versatility and medium absorbing and digesting properties.

WPC can be taken anytime of the day when you need a high quality source of protein such as post-workout, as a meal through the day, before bed etc.

Whey Protein Hydrolysate (WPH)
WPH is essentially a Whey Protein Isolate that has been been "partially-digested" or broken down into smaller peptides, making it the most expensive of all whey protein supplements.

It's rapidly absorbed, requires less digestion and virtually has no fat or sugar.

Just like WPI proteins, Whey Protein Hydrolysate is ideal to take when you need a quick hit of protein.

What does whey protein do?
Whey protein is useful for increasing daily protein intake and stimulating muscle protein synthesis (MPS) which can result in a variety of performance and health related benefits such as;

- Rapidly increase muscle protein synthesis
- Reduce muscle soreness and assist in muscle repair and recovery
- Reduce body fat and improve body composition

When do I take it?
Depending on the type, whey protein can be taken anytime of the day when you need a high quality source of protein.

Post-workout, as a meal through the day, before bed, with breakfast etc are all common times of the day most people consume whey protein powder.

Will vary from person to person however the most common amount of protein per serve found in whey protein powder supplements is usually 15g to 30g.

How much is it?
Whey protein powder supplements range anywhere from $1.00 to $3.00 a serve, depending on the size and quality of the product.
